Senufo Bird Ebony Sculpture

A beautifully sculpted bird made of ebony wood. It is known as Senufo (hornbill) and they believe it is one of the first living creatures on Earth, along with the tortoise, crocodile, chameleon, and serpent. The long phallic beak touching its swollen belly suggests pregnancy and represents the dual forces of the male and female components. This symbolizes the need for both to ensure the continuity of the whole community. The original piece is worn as a headdress by men or carried in a procession. Between uses, it is kept the Poro's secret tree grove.

All our carvings and sculptures are handcrafted, and a lot of sweat goes into each piece of art delivered.  Rosewood is native to Congo, South Africa,  Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The tree produces "wenge", a kind of wood and can have some very interesting featuring, depending on the tree and the cut.  It is very common in West African countries and is excellent for carvings/sculptures because of its density, coloration (black, dark brown, mixed black/cream or brown/cream) and brilliant natural sheen.

Made of 100% Rosewood.

Model is W 28 x H 42 and weight 0.9 kg.
